McCasland Lands Transfer Forward Jahmiah Simmons

DENTON - North Texas men's basketball head coach Grant McCasland has picked up Arkansas State transfer Jahmiah Simmons for the 2017-18 season.

"We are thrilled Jahmiah is here at North Texas," McCasland said. "His character, hardworking attitude as a person and student separate him, which will be a huge in establishing our culture. Jahmiah is a winner and proven that on every team he has been a part of. It is a blessing to have him as a part of our program."

Simmons, a 6-4 wing player, played one season at Arkansas State and will have to sit out the 2017-18 season due to NCAA transfer rules. Simmons played in 25 games, starting nine games putting up 6.4 points per game and 5.0 rebounds per game.

During Sun Belt Conference play, Simmons appeared in all 18 games and led the team with 19 blocks. Simmons scored in double-figures five times, including a career-high 16 points at Appalachian State. He posted his first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds against Georgia State.

Prior to Arkansas State, Simmons averaged 15.7 points, 11.3 rebounds, and 5.2 assists during his senior season and was named the Pensacola News Journal Player of the Year at Pace High School in Florida. He helped the Patriots to the quarterfinals of the Class 6A Regional scoring 23 points and played in the 2016 Pensacola Sports/Subway All-Star Game scoring 17 points, including 11 in the second half. Simmons, a native of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, played for the U.S. Virgin Islands U17 team and was voted the best small forward at the FIBA Centrobasket in the summer of 2015. Led by Mean Green assistant Jareem Dowling, the junior national team competed in the FIBA Tournament of Americas and averaged 11.4 points, 11.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in five games played.
